The Opportunity
As the Health and Safety Officer at Barnsley College, you will play an important role in safeguarding the health, safety, and well-being of our vibrant community. With over 8,000 students, 900 staff members, and a network of campuses across the town centre, your work will have a significant impact in creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
No two days in this role will be the same. You’ll tackle a wide range of responsibilities, from conducting thorough inspections and accident investigations to carrying out fire alarm tests and lockdown drills. Risk assessments will be at the heart of your work, enabling you to identify and mitigate potential hazards while promoting best practices across the College. You’ll also compile clear, actionable safety reports that guide decision-making and support a culture of continuous improvement.
Collaboration will be a key part of your role. You’ll work closely with colleagues across all levels, delivering expert advice, practical training, and personalised risk assessments tailored to departmental needs. You’ll be the go-to person for health and safety guidance, influencing positive change and ensuring compliance with the highest standards.
Your responsibilities will also extend to assisting with the College’s risk management system, assisting departments in understanding and implementing procedures, and liaising with suppliers to ensure cost-effective purchasing of safety supplies. You’ll maintain and update systems and procedures to streamline health and safety processes, ensuring the College operates efficiently and safely.
In addition, you’ll help oversee fire safety procedures, deliver training sessions, and contribute to business continuity planning and disaster recovery efforts. Your role will also include monitoring stress risk assessments, supporting staff well-being, and participating in the implementation of quality systems related to health and safety. About you
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Health and Safety professional who is driven by a passion for fostering a safe and supportive environment for students, staff, and visitors alike. If you are a proactive individual with a strong technical background and a commitment to excellence, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. Ideally, you will hold a NEBOSH General Certificate or be willing to work towards it, alongside relevant Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English.
